Fantastic Four: The Review

Ok so this is probably going to be controversial but I actually didn’t mind this film. I think some of the reviews out there are being overly critical. I’m guessing this is due to everyone still being really angry at the first 2 Fantatsic Four films that were made.

As usual, no spoilers in this one but will touch on the story a bit. This is basically a reboot of everything that we’ve seen in the previous 2 films, which for me can only be a good things I hated the other 2 films.

The story starts with a young Reed Richards at school saying that he wants to be the first person to teleport organic material. This is where he meets Ben Grimm and their friendship begins. Fast forward 7 years and the adult Reed (Miles Teller) and Ben (Jamie Bell) have made a working model of the teleporter which gets the attention of Franklin Storm and his adopted daughter Sue Storm (Kate Mara), who then offer Reed a place at the company they work at where he can make the teleporter for real.

This is when you meet Victor Von Doom (Toby Kebbell) and Johnny Storm (Michael B Jordan). As you prob already know they get affected by some other world stuff which changes who they are.

There are some great moments in this film and the idea behind it is a good one. I liked that the origin of how they got their powers is different and also how they control them (by wearing suits that keep the powers in check). People have complained about it as they want it a certain way but it’s nice to see a new spin on it.

What does let the film down is that it’s too much of an origin story and it feels like it’s just setting up a sequel (which judging by the reviews is never going to happen). Some of the dialogue is really clunky and there are places where the effects look a bit shaky.

One weird thing was that some of the scenes that were in the trailer are no longer in the film, which was a shame as it was mainly action scenes. I read an article this morning where the director Josh Trank said that he had a version of the film a year ago that we’ll never see as the studio wanted reshooting done.

For me this just proves that 20th Century Fox should just hand the rights back to Marvel and stop trying to make a FF4 film as I don’t think it’s ever going to work in the fans eyes.

To sum up, this isn’t as terrible as everyone is saying but it also isn’t the best superhero film that’s ever been made either.
